Dayna Steele, born Dayna Frances Nicholson in Houston, Texas, emerged as a trailblazing figure in radio, earning the title “First Lady of Rock ‘n’ Roll” during Dayna Steele’s tenure at Rock 101 KLOL. After graduating from Dulles High School at 16 and briefly studying theater at Texas A&M, Steele’s radio career ignited in 1979. Dayna Steele joined KLOL in 1982, following stints at KRLY, 104 KRBE, and 97 Rock (KSRR).

At KLOL, Dayna Steele anchored the midday slot, captivating listeners dubbed “Steele Workers” with her sultry voice, sharp wit, and deep rock knowledge. From 1982 to 1997, Dayna Steele became a Houston icon, thriving during the station’s peak as a top-rated Album-Oriented Rock powerhouse in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Dayna Steele’s personal connections with rock legends like Sammy Hagar and Joan Jett enriched her broadcasts, while her role in KLOL’s “Mother’s Family” fostered a tight-knit, Houston-centric vibe alongside talents like Mark Stevens, Jim Pruett, and Colonel St. James.

Her influence earned her a spot among Friday Morning Quarterback’s top female DJs and a 1990 Billboard Radio Personality of the Year nomination—the only woman among five nominees. After leaving KLOL, Dayna Steele’s legacy endured; she was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2010.

Beyond radio, she became an author, motivational speaker, and congressional candidate, but her KLOL years remain a cornerstone of Houston’s rock history, reflecting a time when DJs shaped the city’s cultural pulse.
