Joe Sayre, better known as Col. St. James, was a legendary Houston radio personality whose tenure at 101 KLOL left an indelible mark on the city’s rock scene. Born in Texas, Col. St. James radio journey began in 1973, but it was at KLOL from 1980 to 1984 where he truly became an icon.

Adopting the “Colonel St. James” persona, he embraced the station’s “Rock N’ Roll Army” campaign—a promotional gimmick other DJs shunned due to its military connotations during the Vietnam War era. With his distinctive voice, warm humor, and deep love for rock music, he turned it into a cultural phenomenon, issuing “Army cards” to legions of devoted listeners.

At KLOL, Col. St. James hosted afternoon drives, blending music with engaging storytelling, and championed the station’s shift from progressive rock to a more structured Album-Oriented Rock format. His camaraderie with colleagues like Dayna Steele and Jim Pruett fostered a tight-knit “Mother’s Family” vibe, making KLOL a Houston institution.

Beyond KLOL, Sayre’s 52-year career spanned stations like 97 Rock, KSRR, and XM Satellite Radio, earning him a 2009 Texas Radio Hall of Fame induction. Known for his kindness and ability to connect—with rock stars like Eddie Money or everyday fans—he remained a beloved figure.

Colonel St. James passed away January 2025 at age 72, though his health had declined, his death stunned the radio community, leaving behind a legacy of joy, music, and unshakable Houston pride.
