Craig Roberts: Rock 101 KLOL’s Sports Guy

Craig Roberts served as the sports voice on Houston’s legendary Stevens & Pruett morning show. For most of the 1980s and 1990s, he appeared regularly on Rock 101 KLOL. Because his takes were sharp and funny, they fit the station’s wild rock vibe perfectly. Each morning, Roberts recapped the big games. Then he offered bold predictions. Finally, he roasted the Oilers and Astros without mercy to the delight of Mark Stevens, Jim Pruett and Boner.

After early radio jobs in Illinois, Wyoming, and Indiana, Roberts moved to Houston in 1980. By day, he anchored sports at KPRC-TV Channel 2. In 1983, he launched the popular Sports Sunday show. For over twenty years, he remained the station’s lead sportscaster.

Meanwhile, on Rock 101 KLOL, his segments turned morning drive into must-listen radio. Fans loved his high energy. As a result, they got much more than plain scores.

Roberts was a Marine Corps veteran. He had graduated from Southern Illinois University. Therefore, he brought real grit and great stories to every appearance. Additionally, he called Southwest Conference games for NBC.

He covered high school basketball. He even served as ring announcer for ESPN and CBS boxing. In the end, Roberts made Houston sports feel electric. To this day, fans still remember him as the voice that gave every headline pure rock ‘n’ roll attitude.

Historic Moments with Stevens & Pruett

One of the all-time classics from the Stevens & Pruett Show involving Craig Roberts happened during an Oilers post-game report in the mid-90s.

The Oilers had just gotten crushed by the Bills in a playoff game (the infamous 41–38 comeback loss that never quite came back). Craig came on the air the next morning, still hoarse from screaming at the TV the night before, and started his update dead-serious:“Folks, the Houston Oilers yesterday proved once again that when it comes to choking in the playoffs, they are the undisputed world champions…

”Before he could finish the sentence, Stevens hit the sound effect of a toilet flushing, Pruett started fake-crying, and someone in the control room dropped in the sound of a crowd chanting “O-I-L-E-R-S SUCK! O-I-L-E-R-S SUCK!”Craig tried to keep going like a professional: “Anyway, Jeff George threw for—”

Stevens immediately interrupted: “Jeff George threw FOR THE OTHER TEAM half the night! ”Craig finally lost it, cracked up laughing, and yelled into the mic, “You know what? I’m done. I’m going back to Wyoming where the buffalo don’t lose by 35 in the fourth quarter!”

The bit went on for a solid eight minutes, with Craig pretending to pack his desk and leave the studio while Stevens and Pruett begged him to stay and “tell us more about our beloved choke artists.” Listeners called in pretending to be moving companies offering Craig one-way trips out of Houston.

It’s still one of the most requested airchecks whenever old KLOL fans get together. Pure, unfiltered Rock 101 KLOL chaos.
