Best of Stevens & Pruett

The Stevens & Pruett Show: A Legendary Radio Career The Stevens & Pruett Show, featuring Mark Stevens and Jim Pruett, stands as one of the most iconic and influential morning radio programs in Texas broadcasting history. The duo’s irreverent humor, boundary-pushing antics, and undeniable chemistry captivated audiences for over two decades, with their most celebrated tenure occurring at KLOL-FM in Houston. Known as the "Radio Gawds," Stevens and Pruett pioneered […]

Jake Ray: The Guy Who Was Tito Smallberries

Jake Ray arrived in Houston in the early 1990s. He quickly became KLOL’s secret weapon. On air, he used the name “Tito Smallberries.” That name came from a fake porn star in Kentucky Fried Movie. As a result, Tito turned regular bits into total legends.

Jake Ray as Tito Smallberries shined in the Stevens & Pruett morning show. He voiced dozens of crazy characters. He wrote killer parody songs. Because his lines were so dirty, the FCC stayed on alert.

Jake nailed every impression. For example, Bill Clinton. Ross Perot. A drunk George Jones. Whenever Tito dropped “Smallberries After Dark” fake ads, listeners died laughing. Similarly, they loved “Tito’s Trailer Park” updates. In one famous bit, Tito played a horny weatherman. He promised “100% chance of getting lucky tonight.” Meanwhile, Stevens and Pruett faked total shock.

Off air, Jake stayed quiet and super nice. He wrote Grammy-level parodies in ten minutes. Then he bolted to Whataburger. He also voiced promos that sounded like movie trailers.

In 2004, KLOL suddenly switched to Spanish. So Tito rode off. After that, he made other stations shine. Even today, fans still quote him every day. In Houston rock radio, nobody ever beat Tito Smallberries for funny, dirty, and lovable. Pure outlaw genius!

Sadly Jake died October 19, 2015 just 4 days after his 40th birthday.

Funny S&P Bit

Here’s the one KLOL fans still bring up every time Tito’s name comes up: the infamous “Tito’s Weather & Traffic… Together at Last” bit from 1996.

Stevens & Pruett tossed it to Tito for the 8:20 traffic and weather update. Instead of the usual report, Tito came in hot as his sleaziest character voice: “Good morning, Houston! This is Tito Smallberries with your Weather and Traffic… Together at Last! Right now it’s 74 degrees with a 100% chance of moisture. And by moisture, I mean I just met your sister at the stoplight on Westheimer.

Traffic is backed up on the Katy Freeway because some idiot spilled his load… hey, it happens to everybody after a long night. Speaking of loads, the Loop is slow and sticky in both directions.”Stevens immediately hit the dump button and yelled, “Tito, what the hell?!” Pruett, laughing so hard he could barely talk, added, “That’s not even our traffic guy!”

Tito kept rolling without missing a beat: “Loop 610 is jammed tighter than my jeans at the buffet line. Alternate route? Take her the back way… I always do.”

The board lit up with calls, the program director sprinted to the studio, and the FCC got three complaints before 8:30 a.m. Stevens finally cut in: “We’re sending Tito to sensitivity training… or at least buying him bigger pants.”They replayed the clean parts for years. Pure, unfiltered Tito Smallberries gold.
