Brian Shannon, widely known to Houston radio fans as “Eddie ‘The Boner’ Sanchez,” carved out a legendary career as a key player in the iconic Stevens & Pruett Show on Rock 101 KLOL. His journey with the irreverent morning duo—Mark Stevens and Jim Pruett—began in 1986 when the team relocated from Dallas’ KEGL to Houston, bringing with them a raucous, boundary-pushing style that would dominate the city’s airwaves for nearly two decades. Shannon’s sharp comedic timing, versatile character work, and behind-the-scenes production skills made him an indispensable part of the show, helping cement its status as a cultural phenomenon in Houston during the late 1980s and 1990s.

Before landing at KLOL, Shannon had already crossed paths with Stevens and Pruett in Dallas, where he worked overnights at KEGL and contributed to their morning show with fake phone calls and character voices. It was in Houston, however, that his persona as Eddie “The Boner” Sanchez—a hilariously crude and unforgettable character—emerged as a fluke during a skit inspired by This Is Your Life. Tasked with voicing a fictional ex-boyfriend of news anchor Martha Martinez, Shannon’s megaphone-enhanced delivery and off-the-cuff humor struck gold with listeners. From that moment, “The Boner” became a fixture, often overshadowing Shannon’s real identity as he delivered outrageous lines and sound effects that fueled the show’s chaotic energy.

As producer and on-air talent, Shannon was the glue that held the Stevens & Pruett Show together. The program thrived on its mix of rock music, risqué humor, and listener interaction, with segments like the “Sex Survey Hour,” “Married With Fantasies,” and the infamous Uncle Waldo skits—many of which Shannon helped craft. His ability to juggle live production duties while slipping into character made him a standout, earning praise from peers and fans alike. Texas Monthly once dubbed him the “comic genius” behind the operation, a testament to his knack for amplifying the duo’s larger-than-life personas without stealing the spotlight.

KLOL’s heyday under Stevens & Pruett was marked by wild stunts and a rebellious spirit, and Shannon was at the heart of it all. From orchestrating the infamous Holiday Ball at the Astrodome to weathering FCC fines for the show’s edgy content, he embraced the madness that defined Rock 101. The station’s dominance in Houston’s rock scene owed much to its morning show, which avoided the shock-for-shock’s-sake approach of contemporaries like Howard Stern, instead leaning on relatable, sex-obsessed comedy that resonated with the city’s blue-collar listeners.

Shannon remained with Stevens & Pruett until KLOL flipped to a Latin hip-hop format in 2004, ending an era. Post-KLOL, he briefly reunited with Pruett on KIOL 97.5 and later pursued other ventures, but his legacy as “The Boner” endures. Reflecting on those years, Shannon has said the show’s unfiltered style wouldn’t survive today’s climate—a nod to its unique place in radio history. For Houstonians who tuned in, Brian Shannon’s voice and wit remain synonymous with the untamed spirit of Stevens & Pruett and the golden age of Rock 101 KLOL.
